Educator+Geek: Updates Every Week

(She’s been playing with Picnik photo editing tools!)

My name is Casey (Hudson) Mayfield.  I’ve been teaching 11th and 12th grade English Language Arts for 4 years in a small, rural school in Kansas.  We are a 1:1 laptop school and have a wireless campus (yep, I’m pretty spoiled).  I’ve also been given the opportunity to teach English Comp I and II and Gen Lit through the community college.  Prior to being in the HS classroom I taught at both the university and elementary level.  I taught at a private school in a mixed-age classroom. In my pre-teaching life, I was a behavior-analyst that worked with rats, typically-developing children, adults with developmental disabilities and people that had stroke.

I’m a tech geek (always have been) and I really groove on finding, using and sharing new technologies for the classroom and our students.  Hooked on Diigo and Twitter, they are both a major part of my PLN and help me be the best teacher I can be.

There is no better job than preparing my students for their world after high school.   I try to bring the best of technology to my students while bringing the English curriculum to life.  I feel a huge responsibility to prepare my juniors and seniors for the world of work or the world of college.  The picture below is of four of my senior students as they toured my alma mater (an annual trip I organize for students).

I’m married with no children (though we have 2 dogs that we truly consider to be our four-legged fuzzy kids).   Abby is on the left, Boo on the right.  Abby is a master with the frisbee (she knows all the tricks) and Boo has “ball focus” like no other dog I’ve ever seen.  The word “ball” and “b.a.l.l.” are banned from our house unless it is time to play ball with Boo.

An avid fisherwoman …the photo above was taken in the Wabakimi Wilderness in Northern Ontario, Canada (our honeymoon) and that is likely the 350th walleye we caught that week.  Hiking is also a favored activity and I recently added yoga to my morning routine.  (Photos below are from our honeymoon, our cabin amongst the trees [the only one on the lake] and our transportation to our cabin).

Oh, and I’d be remiss if I didn’t say … Rock Chalk Jayhawk.
